"Winter of Frankie Machine, The" by Don Winslow

Initially, I was grabbed by the title.  It made me ask just what this book was all about.  Then, the character himself sucked me in, as a guy who seemed to be just another regular guy living his life – albeit it with a bit more gusto than most.  Finally, the mystery of who might be trying to kill a former mob hitman, a hitman who knew all the signs of a professional hit and was knocking off those sent to do him in, it had me glued.  Winslow delivered.  Great story.  Great characters.  And a sub-plot of a theme you can take with you when the last page is reached.
